Benefits of Renewable Diesel Fuel

Renewable diesel fuel offers several benefits over traditional diesel fuel. Here are just a few:

  • Reduced emissions: Renewable diesel fuel produces significantly fewer greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide than traditional diesel fuel. It can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% and other harmful pollutants, such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.
  • Improved performance: Renewable diesel fuel has a higher cetane number than traditional diesel fuel, which means it burns more cleanly and efficiently. It also has a higher energy density, which can lead to improved fuel economy.
  • Compatibility: Renewable diesel fuel can be used in any diesel engine without modifications or special equipment. It can also be blended with traditional diesel fuel in any proportion, making it an easy and convenient alternative.

Renewable Diesel FAQs

What Is Renewable Diesel?

Renewable diesel is a direct substitute for petroleum-based diesel fuel refined from lower carbon and renewable resources, such as vegetable oils, natural fats, animal fats, and agricultural waste.

Renewable diesel is often confused with bio-diesel or biodiesel. While both stem from renewable resources, biofuel is blended with petroleum fuels. Renewable diesel is processed similarly to petroleum diesel and has a similar but superior performing makeup.

Previously known as green diesel, renewable diesel meets the ASTM D975 specification for petroleum in the U.S. Five plants produce renewable diesel in the United States, with a combined production capacity of more than 590 million gallons per year.

How Much Does Renewable Diesel Cost Compare To Traditional Fossil Fuels?

For California fleets, the cost of renewable diesel is not that different from that of regular diesel or engines using ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) or biodiesel. This is due to the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCSF), which reduces some expenses.

While the per gallon cost of renewable fuel can average $0.15 higher than other diesel options, when you consider the diminished GHGs and potentially lowering maintenance costs that come with other options, renewable fuel make an excellent choice for your fleet.

How Is Renewable Diesel Made?

Renewable diesel production facilities follow a process called hydrotreating or hydroprocessing, similar to the process used to produce traditional diesel from crude oil.

The production of renewable diesel typically involves the following steps:

  • Feedstock preparation: Renewable diesel can be produced from a variety of feedstocks, including vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste products. The feedstock is cleaned and filtered to remove impurities and contaminants.
  • Hydroprocessing: The feedstock is heated and mixed with hydrogen gas in the presence of a catalyst. The mixture is then subjected to high pressure and temperature, which causes the molecules to break down and recombine to form hydrocarbons that are similar to those found in traditional diesel.
  • Separation and refining: The resulting mixture is separated into different components using distillation or other separation techniques. The components are then refined to remove impurities and meet quality standards.
  • Blending: The refined renewable diesel is blended with traditional diesel to create a fuel that meets the required specifications.

The exact process of producing renewable diesel can vary depending on the feedstock and the specific technology. However, the basic steps involved in producing renewable diesel are similar to those used to produce traditional diesel, with modifications to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability.
